Biography
Edwin B. Boldrey, son of Edwin H. and Florence Bell (Barkley) Boldrey, was born in Morgantown, IN, July 17, 1906. He received his A.B. from DePauw University in 1927. This was followed by an M.A. from Indiana University in 1930, and an M.D. from that institution in 1932. Dr. Boldrey interned at Montreal General Hospital, 1932-35, and worked at the Montreal Neurological Institute, where he was a research fellow, 1935-36, and a fellow in neuropathology, 1938-39. He received an M.Sc. from McGill University in neurology and neurosciences in 1936.
Dr. Boldrey came to the west coast as instructor in surgery at UCSF School of Medicine, 1940-44, becoming assist. clinical professor of surgery in 1944-48, and assoc. professor of neurological surgery, 1948, and professor of surgery in 1951. He was chair of the Department of Neurosurgery 1951-56, and became professor emeritus in 1973.
He was visiting neurosurgeon at a number of hospitals and institutions in the Bay Area, and consultant to many others, among them the National Institute for Neurological Diseases and Stroke (1966-73), where he was Chairman of the Training Grant Study Section, and consultant to the Surgeon General of the US Public Health Service, 1960-64. In 1971 Dr. Boldrey received the J. Elliot Royer award from UCSF. The award is given to the individual making the most significant contribution to the advancement of psychiatry and neurology in the San Francisco Bay Area.
As an eminent neurosurgeon Dr. Boldrey was a member of the American Academy of Neurological Surgery, the Association for Research in Nervous and Mental Diseases, the AMA, the American Association of Neurological Surgery, and the American Board of Neurosurgery, of which he was Director, 1958-64. He was a member of the San Francisco Neurological Society, and president of that organization, 1948-49.
