Scope and Contents

The Arthur E. Guedel Anesthesia collection documents Dr. Guedel's long career as an anesthesiologist, scientist, and educator. Material relates to his work and others in the field, including files regarding anesthesia machines and equipment, ether, chlorophorm, curare, and other related topics. Material includes correspondence, reports and publications, files related to conferences and meetings, photographs, audiovisual recordings, artifacts, computer media, and other material. Some material is restricted; restrictions are noted at the series and/or folder level.

Biographical Information

Arthur E Guedel, M.D., was an anesthesiologist and clinical professor of anesthesia at the University of Southern California. Arthur Guedel was born in Cambridge City, Indiana. He was educated at the Medical College of Indiana and graduated from medical school in in 1908 as a first honors student. He interned for 6 months and became interested in anesthesia during his time at City Hospital in Indianapolis. In 1909, he set up his first office for general practice.

Guedel served in World War I and trained nurses to administer anesthesia and created an anesthesia guide that helped many. After the war, he resumed private practice of anesthesia and began his reasearch on improving anesthesia equipment like cuffed endotracheal tubes. In 1937, his textbook "Inhalation Anesthesia" was published. Upon his retirement in 1941, he was the first American to be awarded the Hickman Medal for original work in anesthesia, by the Royal Society of Medicine in London.

The collection documents Dr. Guedel's long career as an anesthesiologist, scientist, and includes a variety of material related to his research and his professional service. The collection also includes material from Dr. A.E. Bennett, Dr. William Neff, Dr. Leonard Ramsay Thompson, Dr. Ralph Waters, and Dr. Richard C. Gill. The collection also includes material from the Guedel Memorial Anesthesia Center and includes a variety of material related to its administration, meeting minutes, photographs, and correspondence.

Dr. William Neff Archives, 1910-1997; X. Leonard Ramsay Thompson, M.D., 1928-1933; XI. Books/ Journals/ Newsletters, 1858-1997; XII. Conferences and meetings, 1959-1997.

Acquisition Information

This collection was donated to the UCSF Archives and Special Collections by the California Pacific Center Library in 2016.

Additions

No future additions are expected.

Separated Materials

Selected publications, including newsletters, from the collection have been transferred to the UCSF Library general collection. Publications have been individually cataloged and are available to researchers. Oversize materials under the series, "artifacts," have been stored on the 5th floor vault of the UCSF Archives and Special Collections
