Biographical / Historical

The Office of Diversity and Outreach was established in 2009 after student activists sent a critical Call to Action to UCSF leadership. The O.D.O.'s work grew out of the work of pioneering grassroots organizations at UCSF, like the Black Caucus, who supported campus janitors during a strike in the 1970s. By their own description, the O.D.O.'s mission is "to build a broadly diverse faculty, student, trainee and staff community, to nurture a culture that is welcoming and supportive, and to engage diverse ideas for the provision of culturally competent education, discovery and patient care." O.D.O. gathers statistics and compiles reports on campus-wide diversity, provides training and educational resources, and works towards the prevention of descrimination, harassment, and sexual violence.
