Biographical / Historical

Father Rodney J. De Martini is a Catholic priest and AIDS advocate and educator born in San Francisco, CA in 1947. He holds Masters degrees in both Liturgical Studies and Counseling Psychology, and served as Director of AIDS Education for the Archdiocese of San Francisco and was one of the founders and also served as Director of the National Catholic AIDS Network (NCAN). He is the author of a 2005 book of prayers for the sick.

A vocal advocate for compassionate care and for AIDS education in Catholic schools, De Martini was also an advocate for the efficacy of condoms in AIDS prevention - a controversial stance in religious communities. He successfully lobbied the National Catholic Educational Association to include AIDS education in its elementary and secondary school curriculum, and this collection contains a variety of pamphlets, ephemera, and VHS tapes related to this cause, and to others that De Martini was passionate about. He currently serves as President of the Board of Directors of the Food for Thought food bank in Sonoma, CA.
