The Lippe Heritage Pain Management Collection documents Dr. Lippe’s long career as a neurosurgeon, a pioneer in pain medicine, and an educator. Material relates to his work as a leader in organizational medicine and pain management, including files regarding his service to the American Academy of Pain Medicine (AAPM), American Board of Pain Medicine (ABPM), California Association of Neurological Surgeons (CANS), and many more organizations in which he was member and or delegate. Material includes correspondence, subject files, reports and publications, study data and patient records, files related to conferences and meetings, files related to Lippe’s teaching and professional service, photographs, audiovisual recordings, computer media, and other material. This collection is of high interest for researchers exploring the evolution of pain medicine, specialty certification, opioid policy, medical organizations, continuing medical education, and health policy. Some material is restricted; restrictions are noted at the series and/or folder level.

Conditions Governing Access
Collection is open for research.The UCSF Archives and Special Collections policy places access restrictions on material with privacy issues for a specific time period from the date of creation. Access to records that contain personal and confidential information about an individual or individuals is restricted for 75 years from date of creation or until the death of the individual mentioned in the records, whichever is longer. Access to medical records is restricted for 100 years from the latest date of the materials in those files. Restrictions are noted at the series level. This collection will be reviewed for sensitive content upon request. Contact the UCSF Archivist for information on access to these files.

Biographical / Historical
Philipp M Lippe, M.D., was born in Vienna, Austria.
Dr. Lippe was a graduate of Loyola University, Illinois, and the University of Illinois (College of Medicine). A pioneer in the field of pain medicine and a nationally recognized Neurosurgeon. He served as a Department Chief of Surgery and Flight Surgeon (Capt.) at Walker AFB. He achieved board certification through the National Board of Medical Examiners, the American Board of Neurological Surgery, and the American Board of Pain Medicine. He was a Clinical Professor in the Department of Neurological Surgery at Stanford University.
Dr. Lippe was a leader in organizational medicine: 30 years as a Delegate in the House of Delegates of the American Medical Association, a member of the Board of Directors of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, Secretary of the California Medical Association, Past-President of the California Association of Neurological Surgeons, and a Founder and Past-President of the American Academy of Pain Medicine.
