Conditions Governing Access

Collection is open for research. The UCSF Archives and Special Collections policy places access restrictions on material with privacy issues for a specific time period from the date of creation. Access to records that contain personal and confidential information about an individual or individuals is restricted for 75 years from date of creation or until the death of the individual mentioned in the records, whichever is longer. Access to medical records is restricted for 100 years from the latest date of the materials in those files. Restrictions are noted at the series level. Biographical / Historical

Lydia Giberson Deane was born in Bath, New Brunswick in 1899. She began her scholastic career at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada. She received her M.D.in 1928, and went on to do her internship in neurology at at the Neurological Institute in New York. Pursuing an interest in neurological psychiatry, Dr. Deane went tothe Emma Pendleton Bradley Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island, to complete her post-graduate work.

Her professional career was centered around her interest in industrial psychiatry. She worked for thirty years with Metropolitan Life Insurance Company doing research in the field of industrial psychiatry. She was, in 1959, to become a vice-president of the company. Dr. Deane was considered a pioneer in the field of industrial psychology. Dr. Deane has received national recognition for her work. She lectured and wrote seventy articles and chapters for books. Dr. Deane lead the way for women in her field ; she was the first woman vice- president of Metropolitan Life; first associate editor of the Journal of Industrial Medicine; and the first woman to be elected a fellow of the American Association of Industrial Medicine. The collection includes a list of awards acquired by Dr. Deane during her career with Metropolitan Life, until her retirement in 1960. After the death of her husband, Dr. Deane moved to California as a resident of Leisure world in Saddleback Valley, where she soon became a leader in her new community. Her lectures and writings continue as she was a member of various committees and second vice-president of Saddleback Community Hospital. Dr. Deane started Meals on Wheels, Child Guidance Clinic, Planned Parenthood Clinic, Arthritis Center and Adult Day Care Center in Laguna Hills, California. In 1978, she was M.C.of her own television program," You and Your Health" sponsored by the United Way.
