Scope and Contents
This collection consists of various materials collected and produced by Chuck Frutchey, an AIDS Prevention Educator with the Stop AIDS Project, the Coalition for Healthy Sex, and the San Francisco AIDS Foundation. Throughout his career in the 1980s and 1990s, Frutchey compiled materials such as administrative records, workshop planning and development documents, research articles, conference materials, ephemera, correspondence, survey reports, his own medical records, personal fandom materials, and t-shirts from various events, organizations, or campaigns. In fact, about a third of this collection consists of these t-shirts. As a pioneer in safe-sex education during the HIV epidemic, this collection reflects his efforts in designing and modeling best practices and guidelines for workshops to be recreated throughout the world. Since Frutchey’s primary approach for safe-sex education was to make the workshops sex-positive and less clinical, there are many explicit images scattered throughout this collection that were used for many promotional materials, both drawn and photographed. Members of the queer community volunteering and working for these organizations, such as Frutchey, were essential in getting through to other members of their community to make a change. Overall, this collection offers insight into the ins and outs of AIDS organizations in San Francisco throughout the epidemic and the educational efforts at work in spreading awareness of safe-sex practices by meeting the community where they are at. Access to a portion of the collection is restricted due to patient records and mailing lists.

Conditions Governing Access
The UCSF Archives and Special Collections policy places access restrictions on material with privacy issues for a specific time period from the date of creation. Access to records that contain personal and confidential information about an individual or individuals is restricted for 75 years from date of creation or until the death of the individual mentioned in the records, whichever is longer. Access to medical records is restricted for 100 years from the latest date of the materials in those files. Restrictions are noted at the series level. Biographical / Historical
Chuck Frutchey was born in Farmington, Michigan, and lived in San Francisco. He was among the earliest volunteers with what became the San Francisco AIDS Foundation. He became a longtime staff member with the San Francisco AIDS Foundation and focused specifically on the education department. In 1984, Frutchey began coordinating the HIV prevention hotline. Around 1989, Frutchey was named the Director of Education and later became the President of the Stop AIDS Project’s board of directors.
During his career with the San Francisco AIDS Foundation, Frutchey was a huge part of the Stop AIDS Project and the Coalition for Healthy Sex where he committed himself to educating the public about safe-sex practices. His educational workshops were unique due to his sex-positive approach that made safe-sex education fun and informative. Frutchey, alongside other SF AIDS Foundation employees and volunteers, organized events such as the Carnal Carnival. Frutchey created the “Buddy Connection” safe-sex workshop that made healthy sex exciting, caring, and accessible for thousands of men during the early years of the epidemic. Among all his other duties, Frutchey was the unofficial historian of the SF AIDS Foundation, rescuing and protecting records throughout its history. It is because of Frutchey’s preservation that many of the records in this collection and other SFAF collections survived.
Given the Mayor of Castro Street Award, Frutchey was a pillar of the community and of his chosen family. As an openly gay man living with AIDS, Chuck Frutchey’s commitment to the cause was personal and passionate. While being on the front lines advocating for better funding for HIV treatment and education, Frutchey himself was a patient in several research trials using experimental treatment methods. In April 2000, Chuck Frutchey passed away after his decades long fight against AIDS, he was 46. This collection was donated to UCSF by Steve Speier, Chuck’s life partner of 14 years, who was a high school teacher that also volunteered with AIDS education work alongside his partner.

Series II-V, VII, and IX-XI are each arranged into Sub-Series and organized by subject matter. The clothing in Series XI is organized into two rows (marked in this finding aid as ‘range’) and each item is numbered accordingly. The row in the front of the box is assigned as ‘range: 1’, and the row in the back of the box is assigned as ‘range: 2’. Each row has a single item placed on top for display, labeled as 'item: Top’. The rest of the items in the row are assigned a number 1-10 going from right to left.
