Organizational History

AIDS Treatment News (ATN) is a publication created by John S. James that investigates and reports on both conventional and experimental treatments for HIV/AIDS and related social and political issues. It is a resource for community-based organizations, government agencies, physicians and scientists, and people with AIDS. ATN began publishing in May 1986 in the form of a biweekly column written by James. The column first appeared in the San Francisco Sentinel, a local gay newspaper, where it was featured for over two years. In January 1989 it moved to Bay Times, a monthly San Francisco lesbian and gay newspaper. Since 1986, ATN has also been published as an independent newsletter. In 1994, ATN had a paid circulation of about 5,000 and a staff of five. ATN stories, leads, and other information are gathered by community informants who pass them on to James and by James himself at meetings and conferences, in-person interviews, and through correspondence, journal research, and telephone conversations. James is the editor, publisher, and main writer of ATN.
