The John S. Greenspan papers document Dr. Greenspan’s long career as a dentist, scientist, and educator. Material relates to his work as a UCSF faculty member and leader in the field of dentistry, including files regarding his service to the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) and the American Association for Dental Research (AADR), and his work as a renowned HIV/AIDS researcher and clinician. Biographical Information

John S. Greenspan, BDS, PhD, is Director-Emeritus of the AIDS Research Institute at UCSF and is the founding Director of the UCSF Oral AIDS Center and the UCSF AIDS Specimen Bank. He and his colleagues, including his longtime collaborator and wife Deborah Greenspan, have made major contributions to dentistry and HIV research and care, including the discovery of the lesion hairy leukoplakia, its association with EBV, and the significance of this and other oral lesions in the natural history of HIV diseases. His research interests include the global health aspects of AIDS, notably studies of oral aspects of AIDS and the role of viruses in oral epithelial and salivary gland lesions. He has published over 300 papers and four books on oral aspects of AIDS, oral pathology, and immunopathology. He has been a featured speaker at many international meetings and has presented and taught extensively. Among his numerous awards are included the 2010 American Association for Dental Research (AADR) Distinguished Scientist Award and the 2012 triennial American Dental Association (ADA) Gold Medal Award for Dental Research. He is a Past-President of the American Association for Dental Research (AADR) and the International Association for Dental Research (IADR). He is the founding President of the IADR Global Oral Health Inequalities Research Network (IADR-GOHIRN) and the Consortium of Universities for Global Health’s Global Oral Health Interest Group (GOHIG). John S. Greenspan was born in London, England on January 7, 1938. He was educated at the Royal Dental Hospital School of Dental Surgery (BDS), the Royal School Free Hospital School of Medicine (earning a BSC First in Anatomy), the Royal Postgraduate Medical School with AGE Pearse (PhD) and St George’s Hospital School of Medicine (M then FRCPath). Greenspan joined the UCSF faculty in 1976. At UCSF, among other appointments, he served as Chair of the Faculty of the School of Dentistry and Chair of the San Francisco Division of the Academic Senate.

Abstract

He and his longtime collaborator Deborah Greenspan have made major contributions to dentistry and HIV research and care, including the discovery of the lesion hairy leukoplakia. The collection documents Dr. Greenspan’s long career as a dentist, scientist, and educator and includes a variety of material related to his teaching and research interests and his professional and academic service.

Graphic material and non-print material, 1955-2003; VII. Memorabilia files, 1973-2015; VIII. Appointment books and calendars, 1970-2013.

Collection materials were donated to the UCSF Archives and Special Collections by John S. Greenspan in 2016, 2017, and 2018.
