This collection consists of various materials collected and produced by Chuck Frutchey, an AIDS Prevention Educator with the Stop AIDS Project, the Coalition for Healthy Sex, and the San Francisco AIDS Foundation. Throughout his career in the 1980s and 1990s, Frutchey compiled materials such as administrative records, workshop planning and development documents, research articles, conference materials, ephemera, correspondence, survey reports, his own medical records, personal fandom materials, and t-shirts from various events, organizations, or campaigns. In fact, about a third of this collection consists of these t-shirts. As a pioneer in safe-sex education during the HIV epidemic, this collection reflects his efforts in designing and modeling best practices and guidelines for workshops to be recreated throughout the world. Since Frutchey’s primary approach for safe-sex education was to make the workshops sex-positive and less clinical, there are many explicit images scattered throughout this collection that were used for many promotional materials, both drawn and photographed. Members of the queer community volunteering and working for these organizations, such as Frutchey, were essential in getting through to other members of their community to make a change. Overall, this collection offers insight into the ins and outs of AIDS organizations in San Francisco throughout the epidemic and the educational efforts at work in spreading awareness of safe-sex practices by meeting the community where they are at. Access to a portion of the collection is restricted due to patient records and mailing lists.
