This collection of papers was gathered by Dr. Varmus in preparation for taking a sabbatical leave from UCSF in 1988. In addition to his appointment calendars, the collection includes correspondence with scientific colleagues, journal reviews, requests for evaluations, and UCSF academic matters. Dr. Varmus chaired a Human Retrovirus Study Group and included here are his committee files (1981-1986).

Florence Nightingale Ward Papers
1 oversize box containing a New York polyclinic medical school diploma, 1 legal-size box containing letters written by Florence Nightingale Ward, newspaper clippings and reprints authored by Dr. Florence N. Ward. Dates span 1888-1919. Three (3) homeopathic medical kits (circa 1890-1900s) that have been transferred to the Historical Artifact Collection.

Constance Wofsy M.D. (1943-1996) was a prominent physician, researcher, and leader in the HIV/AIDS field. The collection contains correspondence, research papers, journal articles, travel arrangements, teaching material, and audio/visual material.
Women's AIDS Network (WAN) records
This collection contains minutes, correspondence, drafts and published articles, bylaws, and other legal documents illustrating the work of the Women's AIDS Network (WAN) from 1986-1992. WAN was the first women's organization among the community service organizations that sprung up around the AIDS crisis.

Bernard Zakheim collection
This collection contains material regarding the life and work of artist Bernard Zakheim. Much of the collection relates to the creation and restoration of Zakheim’s Toland Hall and Cole Hall murals at the University of California, San Francisco. Included are writings, biographical material, audiovisual material, correspondence, works of art, and printed material created by Zakheim and members of his family.
